Filming in Portugal

Portugal is the birthplace of contrasts between the old contemporary and the modern age.

In Portugal, the old values, the charm that emanates from the monuments, the traditional habits, the local wisdom, and the historical heritage all walk hand in hand with the values imposed by a modern-age society.

Home to highly accentuated differences, namely its landscape, this allows Portugal to stage itself as an idyllic mise-en-scène for any kind of script to be brought to life.

The details that lack in a more recent civilization, give Portugal the opportunity to stand out from the ordinary, and thus working as a great fertilizer that sparks any filmmakers’ imagination.

The scenarios alter drastically from region to region; a snow scenery can be followed by a beach one, or a rocky one, or a historical and remote one, in just a few hours drive, and never exceeding more than 10 hours from one place to the other.

When it comes to entertaining, Portugal surrenders itself to its natural enchantments, providing a wide variety of sports, culture, and leisure facilities, enabling one to experience numerous activities.

Besides the activities one can find along the coastline, like surf, wind-surf, para-sailing, scuba-diving, kite-surf, etc, the visitor can choose to indulge in a mountain adventure. Herein the sports can go from rappel, alpinism, or take on a trip down the river. Moreover the countryside presents itself as a great destination for elders too, who more and more seek the healing power of the termas.

Regardless the script’s demands, Portugal has an offer!

The Algarve, with its warm beaches and exquisite golf-courses, the Alentejo with its remote landscapes evoking a sense of purity which is scarce these days, Lisbon, cosmopolitan city, home of refined art works, Oporto bathed by both the Atlantic Ocean and the River Douro, allowing one to take on a breathtaking location journey up the river, and Minho, nest of the Portuguese’s nationality; are just a few examples of what once can stomp upon in Portugal.

All the above regions and others are provided with an excellent network, as well as a luxurious range of hotels and leisure facilities, like the golf courses.

Moreover Portugal offers two values that are crucial to the success of a film production. These latter being, the economical and the lightning value. When it comes to scout a location, one has to bear in mind the light that the place provides, above any other element, since this alone can minimize the costs and shorten the filming schedule. And once again Portugal stands out from any other place in Europe, providing excellent hours of daylight.

During the summer months, one can have up to 10 to 12 hours of daylight, depending on the location. When in Algarve, daylight lasts around 2 hours longer. During winter months daylight can last up to 6 hours. However one should not forget that the summer’s months stretch for a longer period in the Algarve. Economically speaking, Portugal is a place of choice due to its cheap labor’s fees, being one of the cheapest in Europe. These latter reflects not only on contractual issues but also on overall costs, like staying, renting vehicles, logistics, tourism, etc.
